Engineering 3D hepatic microenvironment for drug Evaluation with improved predictability

We have developed 3D microtissue array containing repeated micro-engineered biomimetic microenvironments by integration of biomaterials and microfabrication technology.  Microtissues in varied pathological and physiological states have been constructed by fine-tuning the microenvironments for physio/pathological investigation and drug screening. Here I will present such efforts in engineering 3D hepatic microenvironments to build normal or tumor liver microtissue arrays for high throughput screening and evaluation of drug efficacy and toxicity. The microtissue array platform is expected to upgrade the existing 2D cell culture based high throughput drug screening to a 3D organotypic level with increased predictability and accuracy.
